The Section 8 Voucher Rental Assistance Program is Federally funded and administered locally by HRDC.
The program is designed to assist low-income families to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. Eligibility for a Section 8 housing voucher is determined based on the household’s annual income, which may not exceed 50% of the median income for the area in which the family chooses to live.
There are several steps involved before receiving assistance with your rent. They are:
- Preliminary Application
- Wait List*
- Eligibility Appointment
- Lease Briefing
- Locating a suitable unit
- Unit Inspection
- Monthly payment to landlord**
*Wait time can be over 12 months
**The family will be responsible for the monthly payment of the difference between the total rent and the Housing Assistance Payment.
