You may be able to receive a tax credit depending on your earnings. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) can be claimed when you file your annual income tax return. You also may qualify for other tax credits including the Child Tax Credit, which can pay up to $1,000 per child.
Don't pay more than necessary for income tax preparation. Go to a local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site or community tax preparation center for high quality, free tax preparation.
Don't be talked into "rapid refund loans". These will eat away at the money that should be going into your pocket.
Use your tax credit refunds to improve the future for you and your family. Visit our Family Asset Development Program page on this site to see how you can use your refund to help buy a home, go back to school or start a small business.
When you go to file your taxes and apply for your tax credits, bring the following:
- A social security card for each family member
- All items listed that apply to you or your family
- W-2 forms for all jobs worked in the previous year
- All 1099 forms for other income, if any
- Child care provider name, address and tax ID number
- Any other tax-related documents you have received
- Voided bank checks for automatic deposit
- A copy of last year’s tax return
- All adults on your return need to be present to sign forms
